Black Eldering Bill of Rights:

A Community Manifesto for the Care and Belonging of Black Elders

“A village without elders is like a well without water.”
— African Proverb

Greetings!

Thank you for coming here to bear witness to the Black Eldering Bill of Rights, a community manifesto crafted by 150+ elders, caregivers, neighborhood residents, volunteers, activists, and organizational leaders who committed themselves to answering the following call to action:

How might we, together, use our wisdom, lived experiences, and voices to create a vision for the dignity, care, wellbeing, and belonging of Black Elders?

Under the guidance of California Black Women’s Health Project and Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance, this intergenerational collective (the Sankofa ECO-Group) embarked on a year-long Freedom Dreaming Journey to develop a bold community-rooted vision to ensure that all Black Elders can age-in-place with grace and dignity in beloved communities of care and connection.

The manifestation of that journey, the Black Eldering Bill of Rights, is a community-defined blueprint and framework for building equitable systems, policies, and resources that address the needs and lived experiences of Black Elders and those who care for them.

We invite you join our Black Eldering Bill of Rights movement to promote aging justice on behalf of Black Elders, families, and communities.  Together, we can ensure that Black Elders age with dignity, joy, and belonging.

In gratitude,

Carlene A. Davis, MPA
